Kindest Kansas Citian Readathon

More than 50 volunteers (including Curry’s own Suzanne Licata) gathered Friday, February 6, at the Youth Resiliency Center on Parvin Road in Kansas City, Missouri, to take on the most gratifying gift of service – reading through student essays nominating candidates for the annual Kindest Kansas Citian Award.

Four thousand-plus essays, that is! Submitted by students throughout the metropolitan area from kindergarten through 12th grade, the Read-a-thon drew people together for the happy task of reading essay after essay on people who have made a positive impact on those around them.

A guideline aided the difficult work of grading the essays and by the end of the day, the top three to five essays had been selected for each grade. After that, a small Read-a-thon committee read the essays chosen to narrow the selections further.

All this work will result in the celebration of 12 kind people – one representing the nominees from each school grade, as well as the kindest school and this year’s Honorary Star, a business or individual who exemplifies kindness in our community.

Shout out to the amazing Synergy staff working on this event – Cassidey Collins, Teri Laverty and Tiffany Grazda-Massey. Their terrific organization and preparation made the work of the volunteers go smoothly. We are excited that Curry’s Enza Brancato and Suzanne Licata get to serve on this year’s Kindest Kansas Citian Committee and we all look forward to seeing the fruit of these labors at the event held this year at Science City on Friday, April 17.
